Contacts can say yes or no to open tracking in several places. You can also send answers to Ometria yourself. Whichever way an answer arrives, Ometria records it as the contact's open tracking consent for that email address.
Ometria only applies answers for contacts in countries you've enabled. It keeps answers from other contacts and applies them if you enable their country later.

Website overlays
Add the Open tracking consent element to the email screen of your overlay. Contact your Customer Success Representative (CSR) if you don't see the element.
- In the overlay builder, go to the email screen and add the Open tracking consent element.
- Under Who sees this checkbox, select Visitors in countries that require consent. The default is No one who sees this overlay.
- Enter the text in Checkbox label. The default is "Let us see when you open our emails so we can send you more of what you like." The label can't be empty.
- Save and publish the overlay.
Existing overlays don't update on their own. Update each saved overlay one by one.
What the contact sees: an unticked checkbox under the email field. It's never required. The checkbox shows when the visitor's location is in an enabled country, or when an identified visitor's stored country is enabled. The preview always shows it.
What gets recorded: ticked records a yes. Unticked records a no.
Changes can take up to 30 minutes to show on your website. If the checkbox still doesn't appear, ask your CSR whether your overlay tag needs to be rebuilt.

Preference centre
The default profile page includes the checkbox "I'm happy for you to see when I open your emails". Contacts save it with the main save button.
What the contact sees: the checkbox only shows when open tracking consent applies to the contact. It's ticked when Ometria currently treats the contact as consented, either because they said yes or because they were acquired before the effective date under the default option.
What gets recorded: saving with the checkbox ticked records a yes. Saving with it unticked records a no.
- Saying no to open tracking doesn't unsubscribe the contact from marketing emails.
- Unsubscribing from all emails also records a no for open tracking.
Pages created with No template get the checkbox automatically. Pages copied from the default template, and custom-built pages, need Ometria to add it. Each language page needs it. Contact your CSR to add it.
You can change the wording, with your legal team's sign-off. Don't change the structure of the checkbox.

One-click consent links in emails
Use these merge tags to add yes and no links to your emails:
-
{{ email_open_tracking_optin }}records a yes -
{{ email_open_tracking_optout }}records a no
You'll find them in the subscriptions merge tag category. Use them as the link address:
<a href="{{ email_open_tracking_optin }}">Yes, you can see when I open your emails</a>
<a href="{{ email_open_tracking_optout }}">No, don't track when I open your emails</a>The links work in broadcast and automation emails.
What the contact sees: after they click, your preference centre opens with one of these messages:
- "You have successfully been subscribed to Email Open Tracking"
- "You have successfully been unsubscribed from Email Open Tracking"
What gets recorded: the contact's yes or no. Clicking the same link again changes nothing. Automated link checks by mailbox providers don't record an answer.
Ometria sign-up forms
Ask your CSR to add the Email open-tracking consent (checkbox) field to your form.
What the contact sees: the checkbox shows to every visitor, wherever they are.
What gets recorded: ticked records a yes. Unticked records a no. A form without the field records nothing. Ometria only applies the answer for contacts in enabled countries.
The SMS-only form template Phone number, SMS opt-in (no email) doesn't collect an email address, so the field records nothing there.

CSV upload
Add these columns to your contacts CSV file:
| Column | Values |
subscriptions.email_open_tracking |
true or false, yes or no, t or f, y or n. Not case-sensitive. An empty cell is ignored. Any other value is an error. |
subscriptions.email_open_tracking.dt_updated |
Optional. The date and time the contact gave their answer. |
Each row needs an email address. If the row includes the contact's country, Ometria stores it with the consent record.
What gets recorded: a yes or no for each row with a value.

API
Send the answer in the subscriptions object of the contact record in the Push API:
"subscriptions": {
"email_open_tracking": {
"allow_marketing": true,
"value": "jane@example.com",
"timestamp": "2026-09-30T10:00:00Z"
}
}-
allow_marketing:truefor yes,falsefor no -
value: the contact's email address. It must be a valid email address, or Ometria rejects the record. -
timestamp: when the contact gave their answer
If you leave out the email_open_tracking object, nothing changes. @force_optin doesn't affect open tracking consent.
To read consent, use GET /v2/profiles/{id}, GET /v2/profiles or GET /v2/lists/{id}/contacts. Each profile includes:
"channels": {
"email_open_tracking": {
"consented": true,
"consent_required": true
}
}consent_required is false when the contact is outside every enabled country, so Ometria tracks their opens.

Shopify
Shopify has no open tracking consent field, so the Shopify integration doesn't sync one. Collect consent through overlays, your preference centre, email links, Ometria forms, CSV upload or the API.
Single customer view
You or your customer service team can record an answer by hand, for example when a contact asks by phone or email.
- Open the contact's single customer view.
- In the contact's marketing preferences, find the Email open tracking row.
- Select Subscribed or Unsubscribed from the dropdown. No preference means the contact hasn't given an answer.
The row shows the answer the contact gave, not the effective-date default. It appears for contacts in enabled countries and for contacts who already have an answer. Non-native channels need to be switched on for your account.
If consent doesn't apply to the contact, you see "Cannot record Email open tracking for this contact: email open tracking consent does not apply to them".
What gets recorded: the answer you choose. The Consent tab lists it with the purpose Open tracking.
