Abandoned category campaigns are triggered when a contact visits a page on your site tagged with a specific category (also known as an ‘attribute’) - e.g. ‘dresses’ - and leaves without placing an order or viewing any products.
Use abandoned category campaigns to:
- Iterate and improve your existing abandoned browse campaigns.
- Create a strategy around customer behaviour on your website.

Your browse abandonment strategy
There are two ways to manage a browse abandonment campaign strategy:
| ✅Pros | ❌ Cons | |
| Separate campaigns for product browse abandonment and category browse abandonment |
|
|
| A single campaign for product and category browse abandonment |
|
|
We also recommend staggering the wait times between your different abandonment campaigns to make sure contacts get the most relevant messages.
Separate campaign setup
For this setup you'll have two separate campaigns for your product and category browse abandonment segments.
Abandoned product pages entry trigger
Set up your entry trigger to enter contacts who have viewed a product or page with the attributes you're interested in:
- Contact visited store website
- Contact has viewed a product or page with an attribute - which is one of - [Select category]
Shopify users can select Category or Page.
Abandoned product browse segment
Next, set up your abandoned product browse segment as follows:
- Triggering visit matches…
- Contact had viewed a product with an attribute - which is one of - [Category]
Select your product attributes and apply the segment.
Now the contacts who visited your site and browsed a product will fall into this segment, and you can send them a marketing message that refers to the specific product they looked at, rather than the broader category it belongs to.
Add actions and set up the rest of your flow, then Save and Publish the campaign.
Abandoned category pages entry trigger
Create a new automation campaign with the same entry trigger as before.
Set up your entry trigger to enter contacts who have viewed a product or page with the attributes you're interested in:
- Contact visited store website
- Contact has viewed a product or page with an attribute - which is one of - [Select category]
Shopify users can select Category or Page.
Abandoned category browse segment
Add a new segment node for the abandoned category below the existing abandoned browse segment nodes.
This will catch contacts who were browsing the category but not the specific product pages.
- Triggering visit matches…
- Contact had viewed a product or page with an attribute - which is one of - [Category]
Then select one of the attributes from your entry trigger:
Add actions and set up the rest of your flow, then Save and Publish the campaign.
Set mutual exclusivity
To avoid contacts receiving both of your abandonment campaigns, use mutual exclusivity rules.
This prevents duplicate messaging for the same browsing period.
Once both of your browse abandonment campaigns are set up, set mutual exclusivity rules for them so that contacts can only enter one of these campaigns at a time:
Single campaign setup
For this setup you'll keep your product and category browse abandonment segments in the same campaign.
