Sender IDs for SMS

A sender ID is the "From" number used in an SMS, AKA "sender" or "A number".

This can be a short code or a longer number.

You must have a sender ID before you can start sending SMS from Ometria.

Each country has different restrictions and regulations when it comes to numbers and sender IDs, e.g. in the US a toll free number is preferred, in the UK alphanumeric codes are preferred.

Shortcode
  • Typically 4-6 digits
  • Can be used for two-way communication (depending on local regulations) for opt-in/opt-out only. See: SMS stop and start words
  • You can't request a specific number, it's randomly assigned
  • Country-specific: Only users from the country where the shortcode comes from can text back to the shortcode
  • Shortcodes are typically more expensive than longcodes
  • MMS supported (North America only)

Alphanumeric sender 
  • Must be 3-11 characters
  • Combination of letters and numbers

Sender IDs for transactional SMS

If you want to send transactional and or double opt-in SMS, you'll need two sender IDs per market; one for marketing messages and one for transactional. 

Requesting a sender ID

Once you've decided which type of sender ID you want to use, let your Customer Success Representative know. 

They can discuss commercials with you and help you with the next steps.

You can choose to override your default sender ID from the SMS builder in your automation campaign:

This means you can use a different sender ID for each segment you send to, e.g. you might want to use a unique sender ID per store.
