Apple Mail categories allow users to separate and find emails more easily based on email type.
Apple launched tabs for Apple Mail on iOS 18.2.
The four categories are:
- Primary: Find personal messages and time-sensitive information.
- Transactions: Keep track of your confirmations, receipts, and shipping notices.
- Updates: Catch up on news, newsletters, and social updates.
- Promotions: Browse your coupon and sales emails.
All of these tabs are still part of the user's inbox.
Apple only has one spam/junk folder, called 'Junk'.
Note: When a Transactions, Updates, or Promotions message includes time-sensitive information, Apple includes it in the Primary message list.
How do the categories work?
We don't currently have many details about how Apple auto-categorises mail, but we expect it's similar to Gmail tabs, which considers multiple factors including content and which tab users prefer to read mail in.
Apple users can move mail between tabs to manually reclassify a sender.
Users can also turn off the tabs by choosing List View instead, but they can't choose to turn specific tabs on or off.
